the voice of installation
The VXM4 is the rst digital recording system to carry the Concept Pro name a brand
that is renowned for its quality and reliability. Available in 4, 8, 16 channels and
oering up to 1.5Tb storage capacity, the VXM4 provides a high performance, reliable
recording solution which will integrate seamlessly with fully functional dome cameras,
control keyboards and a wide range of display monitors.
Videcon recently launched the VA-KBDPRO+, a compact, tri-axis PTZ and DVR
controller that can control multiple VXM4s and any telemetry devices attached. All key
operating features of the VXM4 can be accessed from the VA-KBDPRO+, allowing the
VXM4 to be sited away from the control desk to prevent unauthorised access and
theft.
One of the key features of the VXM4 is its simplicity of control and operation. The
on screen display menu is presented in a simple to use and logical Graphical User
Interface (GUI) allowing detailed congurations to be set up with ease. When setup is
complete, the conguration can be saved to local USB memory stick and transferred to
other VXM4 units for rapid deployment where many units are being installed.
The unit supports up to 4 audio inputs, which can be assigned to any video channel.
Live and recorded audio can be monitored over the internet and the advanced 'talk
back' facility allows two way communications with the site.
Videcon has played an integral role throughout the development of the VXM4 to
ensure that the system fully meets installers' expectations. In addition to oering
advanced functionality, ease of installation and competitive pricing, the VXM4 comes
with an exceptional 3 year warranty alongside professional advice and support from
Videcon's after-sales team.

Overall assessment
We are going to really miss the VXM4
because from past experience we know
it is going to be a hard act to follow,
especially when it comes to setup and
conguration, though at the risk of
repeating ourselves, an on-screen
mouse/pointer control system would
save an awful lot of time.
The range of features is also going to
be dicult to beat, especially on such a
modestly priced machine, and although
picture quality isn't the best we've seen
recently, it's well inside the general
surveillance ballpark and more than
adequate for the vast majority of non-
specialist applications.
to the Internet and the steps that need to be taken,
including some very detailed instructions, are
included if the network is connected to a Netgear
router.
Setting up a DVR with this kind of capability
and network connectivity can often be a tiresome
and frustrating business but the combination of
clear and very well illustrated instructions, plus the
excellent on-screen displays, really makes life a
whole lot easier.
Normal day to day operations follows the same
pattern it's much easier to drive using the remote
control and pretty well everything does as it is told
and requires little or no thought. The only area
where there could be some improvements is in the
Search facilities, which can involve a lot of button
pressing (another strong case for mouse control).
Playback using the Jog/Shuttle control is ne,
though with a top search speed of 64x it is still a
little slow for wading through long sections of a
recording and another, higher speed, wouldn't go
amiss. But we're nit picking now and the bottom
line is that this
machine
is about as easy to setup
and use as it's possible to get.
Performance
Picture quality on the default mid-range settings is
ne. In view of the relentlessly glowing review it
has received up until now that might seem a little
restrained, but the fact is the rather heavy handed
MPEG4 compression and the relatively modest
resolution options means that ne detail can be a
tad uy, and strong colours are a little muted.
That is not to say picture quality is in any way
compromised, it's not, and it stacks up well against
the competition, but we have seen sharper, crisper
images on machines in this segment of the market.
Audio performance is ne and perfectly
adequate for recording speech and incidental
sounds.
